Last Stop on Olympic National Park Tour: Visitors Center, Port Angeles

Image
The park is designed so an arm of the park extends into Port Angeles.  From here is the road to Hurricane Ridge.  For us the visitor's center became our last stop because the road up Hurricane Ridge was closed for repairs after some flooding in the area. Here there was a nice display of a whaling boat with accessories, including a wooden box and a mat.  Also a harpoon with a bladder.  There were also a couple wildlife exhibits.

Visiting Makah Cultural and Research Center Museum of the Makah Indian Nation

Image
The Makah museum is very fascinating.  It is located in Neah Bay which is along the San Juan de Fuca Strait.  The only disappointment is they do not allow pictures or videos to be taken inside.  The museum houses some 55,000 items from the Ozette Archeological Site.   This site is 300-500 years old and was buried by a mud slide.  It included six long houses and their contents.  As such in the museum are whaling boats, sealing boats and the tools to go with each, harpoons, seal clubs, seal spears.  One of the most interesting displays is a long house where you can go inside and see the dealings.  These homes are very large and have different sections for different families.  There are also samples of clothing.  The clothing that survived 500 years is clothing made of cedar smashed cedar bark.  Historical Makah Culture as found at the museum is fascinating. long house

October General Conference 2022: Port Orchard, WA

Image
October General Conference was spiritual, well presented and very historic.   It can still be accessed on-line.  We were introduced to a new Strength of Youth handbook.  Jesus Christ is the Strength of Youth.  For the first time ever a woman of African descent spoke in conference.  President Nelson announced 18 new temples.  This includes Buenos Aires City Center; where I served.  Another temple in Las Vegas (ten miles farther for me than the existing temple)  and a temple in Tacoma Washington.  That is a big deal as we were inPort Orchard for conference, with Natalia and her family and we were with their friends the Merrills.   there was a big cheer for Tacoma, which made me miss the Mexico temples.   I was looking up Lone Mountain, Nevada hoping it might be closer. Merrill grandkids and our granddaughter Ayden in the back of our van.

Labor Day Weekend Trip: Camping Logan Canyon

Image
We traveled to Logan for camping for Labor Day weekend.  We stopped at Angie's first off for breakfast with scones.  Then to camp (Spring Hollow, second campsite up the canyon) to get set up, Mark and Dianna's (who have moved to North Logan) for shopping and a temple trip, and then back to camp.  Miranda joined us after work.  Kelly, Connie and Jed came to see us and brought a cake for dessert for our tinfoil dinners.  Saturday I was able to go for a short walk.  The trailhead for the Logan River hike was next to our campsite.  This is a three and a half mile hike down to Logan.  We only ventured as far as third dam, so made it a short hike.   It was fun to relax there.  The river was flowing over the dam.  Just before this there was a spring flowing into the river.Mark and Liz were going to join us Saturday the canyon was closed for a motorcycle fatality.  Miranda went with us to Pizza Pie Cafe.  They had the m...
