Aboard the USS Midway: Aircraft Carrier: 2022 Spring Break Trip to San Diego
The USS Midway was decommissioned and turned into a museum in San Diego. It did not actually serve at the battle of Midway but was named for the battle. It actually missed WWII being commissioned in 1945. However it served in Korea, Vietnam, and was the lead ship in the First Gulf War. On its deck are two take off runways. The hangar is below deck with three elevators to get the planes ready. I felt the highlight of the visit was the theater where was presented the story of the Battle of Midway. However many other things were fascinating. I liked the radar room as my father served in a radar room during WWII. There was a room which presented the history of the helicopter. The anchors are very large. There were two of them. We did the tour below deck and above deck in the control tower which was very interesting. In the hangar and on deck were planes of many different types. There was a demonstration of how they launched ships which used a sling shot to get them going faster. They also have a restaurants and a visitor center store. It was really a high light of our trip.
